On June 11, 2026, the Ministry of Health’s Emergency Medical Services Personnel Facility-Based Scope of Practice document was removed from the SCoP website.
The most current version of the Paramedic Clinical Protocols have been released for use by licensed EMRs and Paramedics of the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics. The Clinical Practice Protocol Manual version 9.0 includes recent changes to the EMR scope of practice.
The Saskatchewan College of Paramedics (SCoP) has developed a scope of practice guide to provide Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) and paramedics information to outline the fundamental principles, standards and guidelines which are foundational to scope of practice. This Scope of Practice document can be found on the Practice Guidelines page >
The Ministry of Health completed an extensive consultation process with the SHA, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan College of Paramedics (SCoP), Paramedic Services Chiefs of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic on potential increases to the Advanced Care Paramedic scope of practice.
The recommendation following this consultation was a recommendation for increasing the scope of practice for Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) to utilize cyanoacrylate, staples, and suturing (referred to wound closure).
The Saskatchewan College of Paramedics has actively been evaluating the current scope of practice for all EMRs and paramedics since the release of the Canadian Paramedic Competency Framework (CPCF) Entry to Practice standards. It was noted in the evaluation that Saskatchewan-licensed EMRs had a limited scope of practice when compared to other jurisdictions in Canada.
Council has approved updated EMR program requirements to provide the minimum expectation for all EMR programs in Saskatchewan.
These new requirements describe admission requirements, instructor/faculty expectations, program curriculum (includes didactic and simulation, clinical, and evaluation), and program quality assurance.
Effective immediately, all Medication Facilitated Intubation (MFI) reviews will now be completed by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).
The College wishes to advise that Council has approved a revision to the restricted requirement for PCP members awaiting examination results. These changes will go into effect on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Practicing members of the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics are required to complete 20 continuing education (CE) credits each calendar year, 2 of which must be for mental health, and 10 from NOCP areas 4, 5, 6.
The Education Committee has completed a review of the renewal requirements for all members. The changes to the Professional Practice Program will come into effect on January 1, 2023, for the 2024 licence renewal.
