Continuing Medical Education (CME) Requirements
These requirements are needed in 2010 in Order to be Eligible for a Licence to Practice in 2011:
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)1
- 25 CME credits2
- Mandatory Certification2 (issued in 2009 or 2010): CPR-HCP (C).
- Mandatory Skills (completed in 2009 or 2010): Biomechanics of Safe Lifting and Moving, Spinal Immobilization, Mechanical Aids to Breathing including Oxygen and Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)1
- 40 CME credits2
- Mandatory Certifications (issued in 2009 or 2010): CPR-HCP (C), and ITLS Basic
- Mandatory Skills (completed in 2009 or 2010): Biomechanics of Safe Lifting and Moving; and Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice.
Emergency Medical Technician Advanced (EMT-A)1
- 30 CME credits2
- Mandatory Certifications (issued in 2009 or 2010): CPR-HCP (C), and ITLS Basic or Advanced
- Mandatory Skills (completed in 2009 or 2010): Biomechanics of Safe Lifting and Moving; and Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice.
- Advanced Skills Modules3 (assessed in 2009 or 2010): 3 Airway Adjuncts (LMA, Combi-tube and King) which can be assessed as part of an ITLS Advanced course if proficiency is tested.3
Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P)1
- 15 CME credits2
- Mandatory Certifications (issued in 2009 or 2010): CPR-HCP (C), ITLS Advanced, ACLS and PALS (or PEPP Advanced)
- Mandatory Skills (completed in 2009 or 2010): Biomechanics of Safe Lifting and Moving; and Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice
- Advanced Skills Modules3 (assessed in 2009 or 2010):
- Airways: LMA, combi tube and King Airway (may be attained through an ITLS Advanced course if proficiency is tested)3
- Trauma: Intubation, intraosseous infusion, chest decompression and external jugular vein cannulization (may be attained through an ITLS Advanced course if proficiency is tested)3
- Cardiac: Cardioversion, vagal manouevers, transcutaneous pacing, intubation (may be attained through an ACLS course if proficiency is tested)3
- Pediatric: Pediatric intraosseous infusion, intubation, and cardioversion (may be attained through a PALS or PEPP course if proficiency is tested)3
1 New Protocols: Members must provide the College with evidence that they have successfully completed approved training before they practice any new protocol or expanded scope of practice.
2 CME Credits: CME credits do NOT include Advanced Skills Modules or Mandatory Certifications but MUST include mandatory skills as listed. CME credits are awarded on the basis of scope and depth of coverage, relevance of material to paramedic practice, and duration of activity. A proctor or SCoP must award the credit.
3 Advanced Skills Modules: Consistent with the Regulatory Bylaws, Section 7(3), all Advanced Skills Modules must have the signature of a Medical Advisor/Director to a Health Region. This may take the form of a signed Delegation of Authority to a qualified instructor.
